At Chambers Bank, your financial security is our top priority. That’s why we want to keep you informed about the latest scams making the rounds — and how you can protect yourself.
A recent scam involves a convincing phishing email that appears to come from the U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA). The message claims that your SSA financial statement is now available and includes what looks like an official logo and instructions to download an attachment to view your statement.
Here’s the catch: the email is fake.
Clicking the attachment doesn’t show you your financial statement — instead, it installs malicious software on your device. This malware gives cybercriminals full access to your computer, including your personal files, banking information, and other sensitive data. They can then use that access to steal your identity or commit financial fraud.
How to Protect Yourself:
-
Don’t download attachments from unexpected emails. Legitimate government agencies, like the SSA, rarely share sensitive information by email — especially with attachments. They typically use secure postal mail for official communication.
-
Look closely at the sender’s email address. Scammers often use email addresses that look almost identical to official ones, with small but critical differences.
-
Be cautious — always. While this scam targets U.S. residents, phishing techniques like this are used around the world. If something feels off, trust your instincts. Pause before you click.
