Scam Alert: Fake Job Postings Targeting Job Seekers

August 5, 2025

At Chambers Bank, protecting your financial well-being means helping you spot scams before they can do damage. This week’s scam alert is especially important for job seekers—and even if you’re not currently looking for work, someone in your family might be.

The Scam: Too Good to Be True Job Offers

Let’s say you’re browsing job sites like ZipRecruiter or LinkedIn and you come across a posting for a dream job. It promises:

  • A high salary

  • Minimal experience required

  • Flexible hours

  • A well-known company

It all sounds amazing—until you apply. Within hours, you get a message from a “hiring manager” asking you to click a link to confirm your direct deposit information before your interview. The page you land on requests your Social Security number, credit card info, and home address.

Red flag! The job was fake. The cybercriminals just wanted your personal information—and now they have it.

How to Spot a Job Scam

These scams are getting harder to detect, but there are a few key signs to look out for:

  1. Suspiciously High Pay
If the salary is significantly higher than what’s typical for the position—or if the job seems overly easy for the money offered—it’s probably a scam.

  2. Requests for Personal Information Early On
Legitimate employers won’t ask for sensitive data like Social Security numbers, bank details, or credit card info until after you’ve had a formal interview and accepted an offer.

  3. Unusual Contact Details
Scammers often use email addresses or phone numbers that don’t match the company’s official domain. Watch for typos, Gmail or Outlook addresses, and vague company descriptions.

Stay Safe Online

If you or someone you know is job hunting, share these tips and always verify job opportunities through official company websites. When in doubt, don’t click—call the company directly to confirm the job offer.

At Chambers Bank, we’re here to help you protect what matters most. Stay tuned for more scam alerts, and don’t hesitate to reach out if you have questions about online security.
